A Geothermal System: Quiet, Clean, and Quite Energy-Efficient

Are you thinking about replacing your heating and cooling system?  A geothermal heating and cooling system is quiet, clean and energy efficient, making it an ideal choice for the mild Orlando climate.

Ground-source heat pumps work by pumping heat through a closed or open looped pipe system containing a clean refrigerant and installed vertically or horizontally in the ground. During winter months, the system works to extract heat from the constant 60-degree underground, using it indoors as needed. The reverse is true in the summer months; the cooling portion of the system works to extract heat from indoors and return it underground.

Unlike traditional air conditioners and heating systems, a geothermal heat pump (GHP) or ground-source heat pump is equipped with mufflers, foam insulation and scroll compressors, making them significantly quieter.

GHPs are better for the environment because they use natural heat from the ground instead of burning fossil fuels like coal or gas. They also use much less electricity than their traditional counterparts do. Some models can be equipped with solar panels.  Most can be fitted with an optional desuperheater, which heats the water coming in to your hot water tank. Non-chlorine refrigerants used in the underground pipe system make them cleaner and safer.

The U.S. Department of Energy and the EPA acknowledge geothermal heat pumps as being energy efficient.  Most have earned the Energy Star label, which means they meet strict governmental guidelines. According to the Energy Star program, qualified systems are up to 45 percent more energy efficient than standard models.

Geothermal systems generally cost slightly more to install than other air conditioning and heating units but the reduced utilities, low maintenance costs and less harmful impact on our environment make the initial investment worth it.
