Conserve Water With These Plumbing FixturesOrlando may be near the ocean, but that doesn’t mean we can afford to waste clean water. You can conserve this precious resource and lower your bills just by upgrading some of your bathroom and kitchen plumbing fixtures.

Water-Saving Toilets

The toilet the biggest water-hog in most homes, with older models using up to 6 gallons per flush (gpf). Today’s WaterSense labeled toilets use just 1.28 gpf, making them 20 percent more efficient than models that merely meet today’s legal standard of 1.6 gpf. You won’t find these toilets remaining dirty or clogging up frequently, either. To earn the WaterSense label, a toilet must perform as well as or better than standard models.

To save even more water, install a dual-flush toilet. These give you the option of using a full flush for solid waste and a smaller, water-conserving flush for liquid waste. If you have several men or boys in your household, consider installing a urinal. Low-flow urinals use as little as 0.5 gpf.

Shower Heads and Faucets

After toilets, showers are often the next biggest water-users. Switching to a low-flow shower head could cut your shower’s water use by up to 70 percent. Because it takes energy to heat the hot water your shower uses, cutting your water use here will reduce your gas or electric bills, too.

In terms of performance factors such as water coverage and spray intensity, WaterSense labeled shower heads compare favorably to standard models. Proper installation is essential for ensuring a shower head performs correctly and efficiently, so contact a professional when you’re ready to upgrade.

WaterSense labeled bathroom and sink faucets use up to 30 percent less water than standard faucets, so this is another plumbing fixture upgrade worth making. If you’re not quite ready to replace your faucets, though, replace your existing tap aerators with flow limiters. These devices restrict water flow just enough to conserve water without impairing water pressure or otherwise interfering with your use of the tap.
