Is your home not staying cool in Orlando summers and warm in winters? Your home may not be energy efficient. Why question the energy efficiency of your home when you can easily get all the answers through a home energy audit?

What is an energy audit?

An energy audit checks your home to see where it is losing energy and thereby driving up your utility bills. The audit also gives you solutions and suggestions to make your home more energy efficient.

A home energy audit is performed by a professional energy auditor, who looks for leaks, checks the insulation and inspects the ductwork and furnace. He also will conduct a blower test and use an infrared camera to look for leaks. You even can get a HVAC contractor to perform the energy evaluation. Alternatively, you can try a DIY energy audit.

What does a home energy audit consist of?

The energy auditor will do the following:

  • Conduct a visual inspection of the home, the heating and cooling systems and appliances.
  • Perform a blower door test, which will depressurize your home to see the patterns of the airflow and identify leaks.
  • Take infrared images to identify possible problem areas in the walls, floors and ceilings. The special camera used can look through the drywall and identify electrical issues, missing insulation as well as hot spots.

Typically, an energy audit takes about three to four hours to finish and costs about a couple hundred dollars.
