Determining Whether HVAC Zoning Is Right for Your Orlando Home

Determining Whether HVAC Zoning Is Right for Your Orlando Home

Jul 21, 2015

How often is every room in your Orlando home occupied at the same time? Probably not too often, so why would you pay to heat or cool your entire house at once? HVAC zoning allows you the freedom to choose where you spend your energy dollars according to which rooms are occupied. Here are some tips to help you decide if it’s the right choice for your family.

What Is HVAC Zoning?

This type of system divides your home into zones according to their heating and cooling requirements, as well as other factors that influence how certain areas are able to maintain a certain temperature. Though only one central HVAC system is used, each zone is controlled with its own thermostat and motorized dampers that open or close on demand.

When a thermostat calls for conditioned air, a signal is transmitted to a central control panel, activating the cooling, heating or fan based on need. The necessary damper is opened and the air is directed to the space, while the others remain closed.

Benefits of HVAC Zoning

Improved comfort based on individual preference is a welcome benefit, in addition to the following:

  • Convenience: Easily adjust the temperature in the room you’re in rather than walking to another area of the home to a central thermostat.
  • Lower energy bills: With a zoning system, you only pay for conditioned air you’re using. HVAC zoning can save even more when used in conjunction with programmable thermostats that are set to energy efficient temperatures based on your family’s schedule.
  • Increased longevity: Wear and tear on HVAC equipment will be reduced with less usage.
  • Flexibility: A zoning system can be installed on almost any new or existing HVAC system.

Maximize Your Savings

Any home will benefit from a zoning system, particularly those with multiple levels, cathedral ceilings, plenty of large windows, and living spaces over a garage. Finished basements and attic spaces also stay more comfortable with zoning.
