Programmable Thermostats: Look at What They Can Do Now

If you’re looking for an easy way to regulate your energy savings and home comfort this summer, look no further than a programmable thermostat. There are many different models on the market. Whether you’re looking for something basic or looking to upgrade to a high-tech version, there’s a programmable thermostat available to fit your needs.

Why do I need a programmable thermostat?

Programmable thermostats save you money by automatically setting your temperature back to a predetermined “set-point” while you’re sleeping or at work or play. By setting your thermostat back 5-7 degrees for eight hours or more you can save up to 15 percent on your cooling or heating bill. You could dedicate yourself to manually setting your thermostat back, but not many people will continue to do this consistently day in and day out.

The other problem with manually setting back your thermostat is that when you wake up or come home, it will take a while for the temperature to return to your comfort level. It may take 30 minutes or more for it to cool down or heat up to the desired temperature. It’s tempting to crank up the thermostat past the recommended temperature, but this wastes energy and doesn’t get you to the desired temperature any faster. A programmable thermostat can be set to start cooling down or heating up 30 minutes before you wake up or come home so that your home’s comfortable when you need it.

What new technology is available in programmable thermostats?

New thermostats are equipped with touch screens, Wi-Fi technology and remote access. They come with apps so you can manage them remotely via your phone or tablet. Nest makes a “smart” thermostat that learns from your behavior and adjusts itself over time to build a program around your schedule.
