Common Problems That Plague Florida Water Heaters

Common Problems That Plague Florida Water Heaters

Jun 16, 2015

Hot water is a necessity for Florida homeowners. Can you imagine taking a shower or washing dishes without hot water? If your hot water goes out, you’ll be sure to notice just how much you use it. Below are common water heater problems, along with tips on how to identify these issues and the next steps you should take to get them fixed.

No Hot Water

There’s probably an issue with your pilot light if you don’t have hot water. Find the light on the heater, and if there’s no flame, follow instructions in the owner’s manual to relight it. If you have issues, contact an HVAC technician for expert help.

Odd Noises

If you hear strange noises, it may be due to a buildup of sediment or hard water minerals. The solution is to drain the tank and flush out the sediment. This is a little tougher and a good time to call a professional for help.

Muddy Water or Metallic Taste

Muddy water or water with a metallic taste  are common preemptive signs of larger issues coming your way. Have the heater assessed now by a professional before this occurs.

Leaking Water

If you find water pooling by the water heater, the issue is likely a leaky pipe or loose valve. First, turn off the electricity and try to find where the water is leaking. Tighten any reachable valves. If you can’t find the leak, you may have a defective element, faulty valve or blocked vent.

Water Stays Cold or Warm

First, check that the temperature is properly set on the water heater. If it is, the water may be bogged down with mineral deposits, and the tank will need to be flushed. You could check the dip tube; just disconnect the cold water supply line and take the tube out. If that’s broken, your water won’t heat properly.
