If you or your family members are experiencing health or allergy issues related to dust, mold or other allergens, it may be time to consider getting an air duct cleaning. While every home is different, there are certain situations where bringing in an HVAC specialist to clean the ductwork in your home would be worthwhile.

Why Pay for a Duct Cleaning?

The air in and around your home contains many particulates that can cause issues with both your health and the operation of your HVAC system. These particles – dust, pet dander, mold, pollen – over time can build up in your duct system and on the various components of your heating and cooling equipment. If it becomes bad enough, these particles can blow back out into your home, compromising indoor air quality.

Air filters are designed to prevent dust and debris from making their way into your system. However, they need to be inspected and changed when dirty, and the filter has to be of high enough quality and efficiency to capture most of the airborne particles in your home. Dust buildup in your ducts may have occurred before you bought the house, or it may just be a result of time and regular operation of your system. To have your ductwork inspected – and cleaned if necessary – bring in a professional.

There are a few situations in particular that warrant duct cleaning. If your ductwork has been infested with vermin or rodents, it should be cleaned to prevent potential health problems. If mold has made its way into the ducts, it will continue to produce spores – particles that can trigger allergies – until the mold is removed. If you live in a particularly dusty environment, duct cleaning may also be advisable on a regular basis.
