Remodeling or renovating a home creates a lot of dust and unluckily dust and dirt can cause damage to your HVAC system. It is therefore important to protect your HVAC system against potential damage when renovating of your home. By following a few precautions you can provide adequate protection for your heating and cooling systems.

How to Protect your HVAC system

  • Consult with your HVAC contractor prior to the start of the renovation process to ensure that the heating, cooling and ventilation systems will still operate effectively when the renovations have been completed.
  • It is preferable not to use your heating or cooling systems when work that creates dust is being performed.
  • Check that the registers in the work area have been closed and that they are covered to keep dust from infiltrating the ductwork system.
  • Dusty work, such as sanding and cutting, should be completed outside the house if possible.
  • Isolate the work area from the rest of the house with plastic tarps.
  • Check that the work area is cleaned on a regular basis to prevent the build-up of dust and dirt.
  • Clean the air filter regularly and consider replacing it when the renovations have been completed. Dirty filters can cause damage to your HVAC system and can block the airflow.
  • Have your blower, indoor coil and ductwork inspected by your HVAC contractor when the renovations have been completed.
  • Consider having the ducts cleaned to remove any dust or dirt that may have infiltrated the system during the renovation process.

HVAC breakdowns are expensive to repair and can inconvenience your family. Taking precautions to protect your heating and cooling systems will significantly reduce the risk of damage to your HVAC equipment.
