Be Careful, You Could Void Your HVAC Warranty — What You Need to Know

Your HVAC system is one of the most expensive parts of your home, protecting you from the worst weather that Orlando has to offer. If you would like to make sure that your system remains protected by the manufacturer, make sure that you do not void your HVAC warranty by avoiding these common mistakes:

Not registering the warranty: As soon as you have a new HVAC system installed, make sure that you register the system with the manufacturer. Some manufacturers will not honor a warranty or will reduce the length of its term if the system is not registered within a certain amount of time after the installation.

Improperly installing the system: If you do not choose a reputable contractor, you may end up with a system that not installed according to the manufacturer’s recommended procedures, which will void your HVAC warranty. Make sure your contractor performs all the required steps properly before the installation, such as correctly sizing your system with Manual J load calculations.

Not performing routine maintenance: At least once a year you must have a professional inspect your HVAC system and perform the routine maintenance required by the manufacturer. Not doing so will void your HVAC warranty quickly. The warranty does not cover the cost of maintenance, so it may be beneficial to consider entering into a maintenance agreement with your contractor to keep the costs reasonable and to reduce the likelihood that you will forget to have the maintenance performed.

Not keeping receipts: Make sure you keep a record of all maintenance and repairs, so that if something does go wrong with the HVAC system due to a manufacturer defect, you can prove that you have had the required maintenance done by a professional throughout the system’s life.

Using generic replacement parts: If you do have to have your system repaired, make sure that you hire a certified HVAC contractor and use replacement parts that are recommended by the manufacturer.
