Proper maintenance of your heating and cooling systems is necessary to keep your HVAC units performing at an optimal efficiency level. The air filters, in particular, require special care to be sure they are not clogged with dirt and dust.

A clogged air filter will decrease the airflow through your HVAC units and lower the energy efficiency of the system. The blocked air holds contaminants within it. These contaminants will eventually collect on the evaporator coil, which can lead to many problems and reduce the efficiency of the evaporator. To avoid unnecessary repairs, it is vital that you inspect your filters often.

Clean air filters not only keep your system from becoming damaged due to excess dirt, they also save you money on your monthly utility bills. The MERV rating systems ranks air filters in terms of their ability to filter particles of varying sizes. MERV is an acronym for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. Filters are given a MERV rating between one and twenty. A high MERV rating signifies a highly efficient filter that is able to remove microscopic particles up to 0.3 micrometers in size. One of the best devices for a home setting is a pleated filter with a MERV rating of 12.

You will need to know the type of filter you have in your system. Check to see whether your filter is disposable or not. A disposable filter simply needs to be replaced. Filters of higher quality are typically washable devices. You will need to carefully vacuum your filter making certain not to damage it as you work. Once the dust has been suctioned away, you will need to wash the filter according to the guidelines provided by the manufacturer. Be sure you have a filter that fits perfectly into your unit.
