A programmable thermostat provides home comfort, peace of mind and energy savings. When used correctly, a programmable thermostat can provide up to a 20 percent savings on your energy bills. Over several years, this can add up to significant amount of money.

Most programmable models can maintain up to four separate programs for each day to allow temperature flexibility. For maximum energy savings, allow the lower temperatures to operate for at least eight hours at a time.

An ideal cold-weather temperature setting looks like this:

  • 5 to 8 a.m.: 68 to 70 degrees
  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.:  55 to 60 degrees
  • 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.: 68 to 70 degrees
  • 10 p.m. to 5 p.m.: 55 to 60 degrees

You can modify the programs based on your schedule and comfort level, but the temperature should be 8 to 10 degrees cooler while you are away from home to provide the maximum energy savings. Use the “hold” feature on the thermostat change the temperature manually during unusual days, such as when you are home sick.

Using the settings correctly can provide many benefits. With temperatures regulated, you will know your approximate energy bill for each month. You can prevent energy waste while away from home. You will always arrive to a warm home. You can rest easy knowing you are not paying too much for heating and cooling costs throughout the year.
