With R-22 Costs Rising, Do You Really Want To Hang Onto That Aging Air Conditioner?
R-22 costs are expected to triple in 2012 when compared to the last air conditioning season. That fact, combined with the rising cost of electricity, could make servicing your air conditioner and staying cool during the steamy Florida summer quite expensive.
Why R-22 Costs Are Rising
More than 80 percent of the air conditioning systems in use in homes around the United States rely on R-22 to function. This element, which has been found to damage the earth’s ozone layer when it is released, is no longer being produced. New Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emission standards have mandated that R-22 be phased out in favor of more environmentally-friendly R-410A, which is only compatible with air conditioning system made since 2007.
Although the EPA estimates that R-22 will continue to be available for the next decade or so, simple laws of supply and demand make it all but guaranteed that refrigerant costs will continue to escalate.
Beating Rising Costs With A New Air Conditioning System
Before you start shelling out your hard-earned money for R-22 this season, maybe it’s time to consider replacing your existing system with a more energy-efficient and ecologically sound Energy Star-rated system. Not only will you save on R-22, but you’ll likely reduce your summer electric bill as well.
