New Features That You Should Look for in an HVAC System

The number of advancements that have occurred throughout the world in the last century is amazing, and the HVAC industry hasn’t let itself be left behind. Manufacturers have invented any number of improvements, from digital features to more environmentally friendly products.

We’re often asked what improvements we think are good for homeowners who are considering buying a new HVAC system. Here’s a list of some of the more useful advancements:

Air Cleaners                                         

While air filters have been around for a long time, they haven’t always been the most efficient at improving a home’s indoor air quality. In fact, the better a filter is at improving air quality, the harder its HVAC system has to work to get air through it. That’s why the addition of air cleaning systems is such a great improvement. Usually installed inside the HVAC system, air cleaners can use electrostatic charges or UV lights to eliminate pollutants from your air.

Whole-House Humidifiers

As great as air conditioners and furnaces are, they don’t really help control humidity levels as well as a humidifier can. Both too much and too little humidity can affect the “feels like” temperature in your home, causing you to feel hotter or colder than the set temperature. By controlling humidity, you can often set your thermostat at a more energy-efficient temperature and still remain comfortable.

Variable-speed Air Handlers

If you’ve ever been woken up at night because your air conditioner came on, you’ve experienced a single-speed air handler. It’s either on and blowing air, or it’s off. The downside is that the constant on/off puts more strain on your HVAC system, causing it to wear out faster. The system also has to work harder to bring your home back to the set temperature after the air has been off. Variable-speed air handlers solve this problem by shifting from an on/off pattern to a high/low pattern. Air is always blowing, but only shifts to high speed when needed.
