Have A Hunch Your Attic Insulation Isn’t As It Should Be?

Do you think you pay more to heat and cool your home than you should? Does it take more energy now than it did when your house was new to maintain the comfort level you need? If so, this might be a good time to have your attic inspected. You may be able to save on your utility bills and keep your house more comfortable by upgrading your attic insulation. 

Here in the Orlando area, a well-insulated attic is a key part of keeping your home cool during our hot summers and warm during our occasional winter cold snaps. Older homes may not have been adequately insulated during construction, and newer homes could have problems that prevent the insulation from working well.

A qualified professional can inspect your attic to be sure it is properly insulated and that there are no other issues that may affect your home’s energy efficiency. Your attic insulation should provide adequate R-value for our central Florida climate (government recommendations are for attic R-values up to 60 for our area). Your attic should keep moisture out, so that your insulating material stays dry. A radiant barrier between your roof and insulated attic floor might reduce your summer cooling load.

Federal tax credits can offset part of the cost of home energy-efficiency projects. Tax credits for part of the cost of insulating materials, reflective roofing materials, and efficient doors and windows expire at the end of 2011, so now is a good time to upgrade your attic insulation. 

If you have big energy efficiency projects in mind like installing solar panels or a geothermal heat pump system, the first thing you should do is make sure your home demands as little energy as possible for heating and cooling. Adequate attic insulation is a key part of reducing your demand. If your house is efficient, you can use smaller, and therefore less expensive, heating and cooling systems to maintain your family’s comfort.
