5 HVAC Maintenance Needs for Fall
The new fall season is finally upon us and you know what that means – time to take care of your HVAC system! While it’s going to take a little work, we’ve decided to make it easy for you by providing five fall HVAC maintenance tasks that you can put on your to-do list right now.
Hire an HVAC Technician
As a general rule, you should hire an HVAC technician to inspect your heating system once per year. This will keep the system running smoothly and prolong its operational lifespan.
Clean or Replace the Filter
Your system’s air filter helps remove dust, debris, and particulates from your home, which helps to keep the air clean. Once the filter gets dirty, however, its effectiveness is shot. You can keep your system running properly by cleaning or replacing the filter every 1-3 months.
Install a Programmable Thermostat
While manual thermostats get the job done, newer models are much better at maintaining lower energy usage. There are even units that can be accessed through a wi-fi connection, giving you unprecedented control over the heating and cooling of your home.
Seal Air Leaks Around Doors and Windows
Every home has cracks and gaps that allow air to escape, forcing its HVAC system to work harder to achieve the same results. You can alleviate this issue by sealing any air leaks you find with either caulk, spray foam, or weatherstripping. Doors and windows are two areas that often need attention.
Clean Up the System’s Outdoor Unit
Over the summer, it is common for a variety of debris to make its way to your HVAC system’s outdoor unit. Chances are, you’ll find leaves, branches, and dirt covering the unit if you haven’t cleaned it for a while, but there may also be a bird’s nest or even dead animals and insects. Time to grab the hose and wash it all off!
