Why A Duct Cleaning? Don't You Dust The Rest Of The House?

Why A Duct Cleaning? Don’t You Dust The Rest Of The House?

Jun 21, 2012

Air ducts are a part of the house many homeowners never give much thought to, but to ignore them would be a mistake. Over time, ductwork can develop a substantial buildup of dust and other particles, which may find their way into your air supply. If you haven’t given much thought to your ductwork lately, it might be time for a duct cleaning.

It’s hard to generalize about the benefits of duct cleaning, because every home is different. In many cases, dust, mold and other buildup inside air ducts can aggravate allergy symptoms and cause other problems — but not in every case. It’s not always easy to tell whether your air ducts need to be cleaned, but there are a few signs to look for:

  • Open up one of your registers and use a flashlight to look inside. If you see visible mold, dust or other particle accumulation, this is sure sign that it’s time for a cleaning. Large parts of the ductwork in most homes are not accessible for viewing, so it may take a professional inspection to thoroughly assess air ducts.
  • If your ducts are infested with vermin such as mice or cockroaches, duct cleaning can remove this problem. Even if you don’t see the pests themselves, a duct inspection may reveal their waste.
  • Particles actually emerging from your ducts and being blown into your home is one of the surest signs that a cleaning is needed.
  • If your ducts have not been cleaned in more than two years, consider having them inspected to see if they need to be cleaned.
  • Ducts may need to be cleaned if construction or renovations have recently taken place in your home, as this can release a lot of particles into ductwork.
