Slay Energy Vampires Before They Suck Your Bank Account Dry
Energy vampires are the little things that waste energy in your home. Often, these are overlooked but they may add up to as much as 20 percent of your monthly utility bills. Thankfully, most of these pesky suckers can be done away with quickly and easily.
Here are some of the more common energy vampires that may be lurking around your home and some tips on how to banish them.
- Electronics and appliances – The advancement of technology is great in many respects, but it can lead to a major increase in your electric bill. Most electronics, including televisions, computers, cable boxes and even speakers, draw power even when they’re not in use. The same is true for any appliance that has a clock or can be set to go on or off automatically. The easy way to slay these energy vampires is to unplug items when not in use. To make it easier, you may want to invest in a few power strips; all you need to do then is flick the switch.
- Drafty windows – these power pullers make your heating or cooling system work harder to keep you comfortable. To slay these money munchers, hang insulated drapes, cover the windows with plastic, or use caulk to seal leaks.
- Incandescent light bulbs – Although these were once the only way to light your home, now you have other more energy-efficient options such as fluorescent or LED bulbs. To kill these energy vampires, switch to modern energy-efficient lighting.
- Chargers – The chargers we all use to power up our phones, tablets laptops and other electronics continue to draw power even when the device is not connected to it. To slay these electricity eaters, only plug them in when your device needs to be charged, and disconnect as soon as it has received a full charge.
