Your home’s plumbing is a delicate system, where one problem can cause ripple effects that lead to much more extensive repairs. Some basic plumbing troubleshooting will help you identify potential issues with your system and allow you to buy some time before you call a professional. All you need to do is keep your eyes open and look out for warning signs of potentially dangerous situations in your system.
- Corrosion: If your home has copper or brass pipes and fittings, corrosion is a significant problem. You will notice your pipes are starting to fail when you see green stains around the fittings or discoloration near your shut-off valves, and if you notice corrosion issues, call a plumber right away and to prevent a busted pipe.
- Water heater sediment: Most Orlando homes still use gas or electric water heaters, and the primary reason for the heater’s failure is usually sediment on the heating elements. A quarterly or semi-annual draining of the tank will eliminate the sediment buildup, allowing your water heater to function as designed.
- Faucet blockages: Minerals and other soluble materials sometimes get built up in your faucets and shower heads, which decreases the water flow and pressure. If you are not getting enough water pressure, remove the aerator from the sink faucet or unscrew your shower head and give it a quick cleaning. Much of the sediment will be gone, so your pressure should normalize.
- Sewer line protection: Plumbers are called to repair slow draining sewer lines more than any other complaint. As a homeowner you can be more proactive in caring for your sewer lines by keeping materials out of the system that will cause a problem. Fibrous and stringy foods, like celery and corn husks, can’t be broken down by your garbage disposal and will clog the drain. Throw them in the garbage, along with your used oil to keep the drains open.
