A programmable thermostat can provide you with a number of different ways to control how you heat and cool your home. Programmable thermostats make it easy for you to manage the temperature of your home efficiently. They allow you to program your HVAC system to run only when needed, allowing you to save energy and lower the cost of your utility bills.

Programmable thermostats have a temperature-sensitive switch that enables them to keep your home maintained at the temperature you set. For example, in the summer you don’t want to cool a house that’s empty while you’re at work. But you want it comfortable when you return. A programmable thermostat will cool things down before you get back without running the A/C system all day.

When shopping for programmable thermostats, you should take your daily schedule into consideration. There are three different kinds of thermostats that present different schedule-options to suit your needs. These three models are listed below.

7-Day Model

The 7-day model is the best choice for those of you who have varying schedules throughout the week. With the 7-day model you can set your thermostat to turn on your HVAC system at a different time each day of the week.

5-1-1 Model

The 5-1-1 model is a great selection for those of you who have the same schedule throughout the week and have different schedules for each weekend day. For example, if you get home at the same time each day during the week and have a separate schedule for Saturday and a separate schedule for Sunday, then you need a 5-1-1 model.

5+2-Day Model

The 5+2-day model is similar to the 5-1-1 model, except that it only allows you to set the same schedule for both weekend days.

Programmable thermostats can come with additional features, such as:

  • Voice/phone programming
  • Digital back-lit displays
  • Alerts for when equipment malfunctions
  • Alerts for when air filters need to be changed
  • Touch-pad screen programming
  • Vacation settings

When programmable thermostats are used correctly, they will pay for themselves within four years of purchase and provide your home with exceptional comfort levels. If you are having trouble maintaining the settings of your HVAC system, you should consider installing a programmable thermostat in your home.
