Comfort Isn’t The Only Advantage Of A Radiant Heating System
Are you looking for an alternative to heating your home with a furnace or baseboard heaters? Look no further than a radiant heating system. They are available in three major configurations: under-floor radiant systems, wall systems, and ceiling panel systems. In residential buildings, under-floor and wall systems are the most common. Under-floor systems can be further classified as hydronic or electric, depending on whether they use steam or electricity to generate heat.
Since radiant heating systems provide very even levels of warmth throughout the home, comfort is often a key advantage. However, they offer other major benefits, including reduced household energy consumption and improved indoor air quality.
Heat loss analyses have shown that radiant systems are significantly more efficient than traditional central furnaces. Depending on the age and layout of your home, you can expect to reduce heat loss through glass, stratification, and infiltration/exfiltration by 10 to 25 percent. Overall, this can lead to a 25 to 35 percent improvement in home-heating energy efficiency compared to a conventional furnace.
Because radiant heating systems do not rely on a network of ducts and registers to deliver heat, they contribute to improved levels of indoor air quality, as well. Duct and registers circulate dust, dirt, allergens, bacteria, viruses and other contaminants that have the potential to negatively impact your health. Reducing these risks requires a great deal of cleaning and maintenance. Radiant systems deliver heat directly, and as such, they don’t introduce or circulate these types of indoor air pollutants, making it much easier for you to maintain a healthy in-home environment.
In addition to geothermal heating and cooling, radiant heating is becoming one of the fastest-growing alternative technologies in the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) industry. Retrofitting your home with a radiant heating system can add significantly to its resale value, making it more attractive to potential buyers because of its inherent energy-saving potential.
